FREE Writing & Language Lesson #2: Back-to-School Five Senses Poem

An excellent way to get students to relate a memorable summer memory to the class using concrete imagery is to have them write a "Five Senses Poem" about anything memorable that happened over the summer.

Follow These Easy Steps:

1. Student brainstorms to recall a memorable summer memory.
2. Student uses concrete imagery to write a 5-line poem  (I see...I hear...I smell...I taste...I touch...). Using concrete imagery (vivid specific description) is key!
3. Select a nice digital frame such as the one above, find your own border/frame to print, make your own frame, or use my free template below to write a wonderful five senses poem. I suggest having students write rough drafts first that they can show their teachers for some quick editing before doing the final drafts.
